What is The Chase?

The thrill of the chase. Nothing beats it.

I am supposedly an adult, but I instantly become kid-like when it comes to chasing and recommending the things that move me. Books, music, food, culture, and big ideas about what’s bigger than myself. It’s all exciting to me.

Hey guys - this will change your life! I’ve said that about everything from a brilliant book and spiritual wisdom as much as a new chili crisp and sax solo. And I want to share it all.

The Chase is also a newsletter in which to write. Me like writing real good. And writing and reading fuel so many crucial parts of me, it’s time to just publish stuff between my bread-and-butter professional writing and chipping away at my creative non-fiction book.

The Chase features essays, reviews, recommendations, interviews, and observations. It will be irreverent, truthful, open-minded, and hopefully, once in a while, insightful for myself and a few others.

But The Chase is also a two-way street. It’s said that “you can’t have output without input,” so I need to chase what moves you too. And that’s why the comments section in this newsletter are welcome and essential to its momentum. I truly want to engage, not merely write at you.

I hope you will join me in the big chase.

Who am I?

I have been in the creative and media racket my whole life. Television, radio, print, digital. CBC, National Geographic, MuchMusic, This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Podcasts, lit mags and newspapers. I’ve been lucky enough to cross the globe directing travel and food shows and pinch myself that I’ve interviewed people like David Byrne, Noam Chomsky, Radiohead, Jeff Tweedy, and Anthony Bourdain.

As a founding member of longtime Canadian band The Dino Martinis, I’ve been thrilled to blow the sax in legendary places like The Viper Room, London’s 100 Club, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and played parties for Tom Hanks and for royalty in Tokyo.

And all those creative outlets have the same foundation - words. I am mad for writing and reading. Recently, to ease the detachment of the pandemic, I took a deeper dive into the craft as part of The Writers Studio at Simon Fraser University.

I’m also a doting dad of two daughters, an ice cream fanatic, and a horrible sleeper. This year, my partner and I transitioned to small town life on Vancouver Island where there is much weirdness to write about.
